Roads Conditions & Maintenance

Generally, if a road has a route number associated with it (ex: Fairfax County Parkway - Route 286), it is maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). This includes most primary and secondary roads in the county. Maintenance includes potholes; traffic signals and signs (except street name signs); trees/branches; roadside ditches, curbs and gutters; and snow removal.

  • To report a problem call their Highway Help Line at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623), TTY: 711 or place a work request on-line.
  • VDOT pothole information page.

Other Major Roads

VDOT does not maintain all major roads in the area, however. If you see maintenance issues on the following major roads:

Fairfax County Maintained Roads

Very few miles of public roadway are maintained by Fairfax County.

  • If there's a maintenance issue on a road you know is maintained by the county, then contact 703-877-2800, TTY 711.
  • For assistance in determining public or private responsibility for a road, please contact VDOT at 1-800-FOR-ROAD, TTY 711, or send an email to novainfo@vdot.virginia.gov

Private and HOA Roads

Many private roads are maintained by businesses, apartment/condo complexes, homeowner/civic associations or residents.

  • If you know there's a maintenance issue on a road that's privately maintained, contact your HOA or the business that's responsible.
  • For assistance in determining public or private responsibility for a road, please contact VDOT at 1-800-FOR-ROAD, TTY 711, or send an email to novainfo@vdot.virginia.gov.
